Checkmate Beyond the Board: Sri Sri University Hosts a Grand Celebration of Young Chess Minds

The serene and intellectually vibrant campus of Sri Sri University transformed into a battlefield of strategy, concentration, patience and brilliance as the prestigious two-day State-Level School and College Chess Tournament concluded on a grand and memorable note. Jointly organized by the Cuttack District Chess Association and Sri Sri University, the tournament brought together some of the brightest young chess talents from across Odisha, creating an atmosphere charged with excitement, discipline and sporting spirit.


For two intense days, the silent halls of the university echoed not with noise, but with the deep concentration of players carefully calculating every move, every sacrifice and every opportunity. The sixty-four squares became a canvas upon which young minds painted stories of courage, intelligence and determination. Participants from reputed schools and colleges across the state gathered with a shared dream - to emerge victorious in one of the most intellectually demanding sports in the world.

In the fiercely competitive School (Junior) category, young chess prodigy Lalit Ranjan Sahoo of Stewart School, Cuttack, displayed exceptional composure and remarkable strategic brilliance throughout the tournament. With an impressive score of 7.5 points, he emerged as the undisputed champion, earning applause and admiration from players, coaches and spectators alike. His journey through the tournament reflected not only technical excellence but also the calm confidence that defines a true chess champion.


The College (Senior) category witnessed equally thrilling encounters, where experienced and talented players battled across the chessboard with extraordinary skill and patience. Rising above the competition was Neelsu Pattnaik of KIIT International College, who secured the championship title with a commendable score of 7 points. His consistent performance and sharp tactical play earned him the top honour in the senior division, establishing him as one of the promising young chess talents of the state.


Both champions were felicitated with cash awards of ₹5,000 along with attractive trophies and medals amid loud applause and celebration. Yet, beyond the prizes, the tournament symbolized something much deeper - the recognition of discipline, analytical thinking and the spirit of healthy competition among the youth.

The Junior category produced several unforgettable performances. Ayush Arya Mahapatra of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Cuttack, Sarthak Mohanty of St. Xavier’s, Bhubaneswar and Rohit Mallik of Vinod Bihari School, Jajpur, each demonstrated exceptional resilience and skill to secure the second, third and fourth positions respectively with 7 points each. Their games reflected maturity far beyond their age and kept spectators captivated till the final rounds.

Adding further intensity to the competition, talented participants including Om Swaroop Padhy, Manish Mishra, Pramod Mishra, Sai Satpathy and Udayakanta Nayak scored 6.5 points each, securing positions between fifth and ninth. Their performances highlighted the growing depth of chess talent emerging from Odisha’s schools and institutions.

The tournament also recognized the remarkable efforts of Divyansh Baral, Ananta Jeet, Shreyansh Kumar Dehuriya, Shreyansh Das, Shivadyitya Das and Divyanshu Das, all of whom secured 6 points each and finished between the tenth and fifteenth positions. Their determination and fighting spirit throughout the event were appreciated and rewarded by the organizers.


In the College category, Fakir Majhi of KIIT, Bhubaneswar, earned the runner-up position with 6.5 points, while FIDE Master Harshit Ranjan Sahu of ASBM University secured third place with 6 points after displaying highly competitive performances. Several other participants also impressed the audience with their strategic depth and sporting discipline, making the tournament one of the most competitive state-level chess events in recent times.

The closing ceremony was a moment of pride and celebration. A total of 60 attractive trophies along with a prize pool of ₹50,000 were distributed among the winners and deserving participants. The grand prize distribution ceremony was conducted under the chairmanship of Swami Satyachaitanya, Director Operations of Sri Sri University, whose encouraging words inspired the young players to continue pursuing excellence not only in chess but in every sphere of life.


The occasion became even more special with the gracious presence of Odisha’s first Grandmaster, Debashis Das, who attended the ceremony as the Chief Guest. His presence filled the young participants with immense inspiration and motivation. As he handed over trophies and medals to the winners, many aspiring players saw before them a living symbol of what dedication and perseverance can achieve.

Earlier, the tournament had commenced on an inspiring note with the presence of Woman Grandmaster Kiran Manisha Mohanty, whose inauguration of the event added prestige and enthusiasm to the competition. Her encouragement to the participants served as a reminder of the growing contribution of Indian women in the international chess arena.

The event was further graced by several distinguished dignitaries, including Dr. Jayaprakash Bhatt, Dean Student Welfare of Sri Sri University, and Dr. Sabita Panda, Principal of Sri Sri Academy. The successful organization of the tournament also reflected the tireless efforts and dedication of the officials and organizers. Among those who played a significant role were Mr. Bibek Tibrewal, President of the Cuttack District Chess Association, and Mr. Satyaranjan Pattnaik, Organizing Secretary of the tournament.

The smooth execution of the event was made possible under the direct supervision of senior sports officials of Sri Sri University, including Dr. Rajat Kumar Baliarsingh, Sriram Rautray, Purna Chandra Panda and Prabhat Kumar Nayak. Their collective efforts ensured that every match, every round and every participant experienced the highest standards of professionalism and hospitality.

The tournament was officiated efficiently by a dedicated panel of arbiters and officials led by International Arbiter Suresh Chandra Sahoo, along with Tapas Mohanty, FIDE Arbiter Suraj Maharana, Avinash Das, Jyoti Prakash Mahapatra, Sritam Prusti and Ritwik Sahu. Their expertise and fairness maintained the integrity and competitive spirit of the championship throughout the event.

More than just a tournament, the event emerged as a celebration of intellect, discipline and youthful aspiration. It showcased how chess continues to inspire young minds to think deeply, remain patient under pressure and pursue excellence with humility and focus. As the final pieces were moved and the champions lifted their trophies, the tournament left behind memories of intense battles, meaningful friendships and dreams waiting to be realized on bigger chessboards in the future.

In many ways, the event reaffirmed the growing status of Odisha as a nurturing ground for chess talent and highlighted Sri Sri University’s continued commitment towards promoting sports, intellectual development and holistic education.
