SuryaMitra: Where Skills Spark Careers in Solar Energy
In a world where degrees often dominate the dialogue around employment, there’s a quieter truth that rings louder with each passing year- skills matter. And when the right training meets the right opportunity, transformation becomes inevitable. That’s exactly what’s happening at Sri Sri University in Odisha, where a pioneering initiative is turning potential into purpose. It's called SuryaMitra, and it’s lighting the way, both literally and figuratively for youth aspiring to build a future in the solar energy sector.
The Rise of SuryaMitra
India’s
growing investment in renewable energy has fueled a massive demand for skilled
professionals, especially in solar power installation and maintenance.
Recognizing this need, Sri Sri University, in collaboration with the Odisha
Skill Development Authority (OSDA), has launched a specialized training
programme to address this gap. Known as SuryaMitra, which translates to “Friend
of the Sun,” the initiative aims to equip young minds with the technical
know-how required to build and sustain solar infrastructure. What sets this
programme apart is its commitment to employability. It’s not just about
education; it’s about ensuring that learning directly leads to livelihood.
The Training Experience
The SuryaMitra programme, organized through the Skill Training and Industry Collaboration (STIC) department of Sri Sri university, spans two intensive months. During this period, participants receive hands-on training in solar power plant installation, maintenance and operation. The training is aligned with current industry standards and incorporates real-world tools and techniques to ensure that participants are job-ready from day one.
Importantly,
this programme comes at no cost to the participants. Everything from training
materials and equipment to accommodation and meals is provided free of charge
by the university. The aim is to eliminate all financial barriers and make
quality skill development accessible to all.
Who Can Join ?
The
programme is currently open to male candidates aged 18 years and above. To be
eligible, applicants should have completed Matriculation (10th) or Intermediate
(12th). Those who have pursued ITI training in Electrician or Fitter trades or
hold a Diploma in Electrical, Electronics, Applied Instrumentation or Mechanical
Engineering are especially encouraged to apply. Following the success of its
first batch, the second batch is scheduled to begin on June 15, and
registration is already underway.
Life After Training: Job Placements
The most
exciting aspect of SuryaMitra is what happens next. Upon successful completion,
candidates are offered placement opportunities with some of the leading solar energy companies of India. Esteemed organizations like Adani Solar in
Gujarat and Waaree Energies in Bengaluru have partnered with the university to
hire certified SuryaMitras. The starting monthly salary ranges between ₹21,000
and ₹22,000, offering a dignified income and a stable career path. In addition
to these national recruiters, several Odisha-based companies are also prepared
to employ successful candidates from the programme, further increasing the
scope of employment.
More Than a Course: A Lifeline
Sri Sri
University has always believed in education that empowers. SuryaMitra is a
reflection of this ethos. It’s a targeted effort to uplift economically
disadvantaged youth - particularly those who, despite their capabilities have
remained unemployed due to a lack of specialized skills.
Mr.
Bhagabati Prasad Pattnaik, Head of the STIC department, emphasizes that the
training is not limited to theory. “We are delivering industry-standard
education with practical exposure. Every trainee is prepared not just to work,
but to thrive in a modern solar environment,” he explains. This isn’t just an
initiative. It’s a movement, one that transforms lives by aligning education
with employability.
A Sunrise Worth Chasing
In
today’s uncertain job market, initiatives like SuryaMitra offer a beacon of
hope. They remind us that opportunity doesn’t always come with a degree it
often arrives with a skill, a tool and the right kind of training. If you or
someone you know is ready to step into a meaningful, future-proof career, then
this solar-powered journey might be the one to pursue.
Because
when skill meets opportunity, careers don’t just begin - they shine.
